The entertainment buffet slated for this year’s Indian Summer Festival is geared to please just about every musical taste.

On Sept. 11, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., festival-goers can hear jazz, gospel, country, blues, mojo, Broadway musicals, upbeat and original music from bands and individuals as well as the exciting sounds from our very own Perquimans Pirates Marching Band.

The festival this year features several familiar faces while adding new, exciting acts as well.

“We’re excited about the line-up this year,” said Susan Cox, entertainment chairman for the festifal. “We’ve got old favorites coming back, and several exciting new acts. There is something for everyone this year.”

The Marching Pirates kick off the festival at 9 a.m. followed by Uphill at 10 a.m., a regional band that plays blues straight out of the swampland. According to their website, they bring a mix of original blues and revitalizing versions of lost classics from Chicago to the Delta.

Taking the courthouse green stage at 11:30 a.m. will be a neojazz quartet featuring the local talent of Chris Bittner and others offering the finest in jazz tunes.

At noon, the musical entertainment will break long enough for the crowning of the Little Miss Turtle Queen an Princess.

The music resumes at 12:30 p.m. with the upbeat, original sounds of Undercurrent, a new act appearing here for the first time from the Hampton Roads area.

Undercurrent, a female acoustic duo comprised of Heather Griffith on guitar and Melanie Ganz on vocals, has been “electrifying” audiences on the East Coast for the past six years. This upbeat, fun-loving group creates excitement and energy at their performances and their many loyal fans appreciate their showmanship. Undercurrent has a reputation as a fun, crowd-friendly and interactive band.

Undercurrent has played in many venues in Hampton Roads and on the East Coast. They headlined The Norva and The Jewish Mother, nationally recognized venues. They were on the cover of Splash Magazine, and have been featured in other publications in surrounding areas. They played multiple shows at the Virginia Beach resort area during the spring and summer seasons and played festivals along the east coast. They were recently showcased live on the nationally syndicated JP Godsey show on AM 670. They play upbeat music including covers, and original songs that connect with their audiences and have them singing along to their favorites. Undercurrent prides themselves on stage presence, showmanship and a clean sound.

The musical venue will switch to gospel music at 2 p.m. when the First Missionary Baptist Church Mass Choir takes the stage, offering the full, rich, golden tones of choir music.

A popular favorite, Lacey Reames, brings her unique country and country gospel sounds to the stage at 3 p.m. following by Riddle at 4 p.m.

Riddle is a group of musicians who live in the Albemarle area and performs primarily songs from the “Great American Songbook”, a term which refers to the music of the Broadway theater, Tin Pan Alley, and Hollywood musicals between the 1920’s through the 1960’s.

Members of the band include Mark Sclafani, guitarist, Christine Sclafani, lead vocalist, Hiram Gallop, bassist, Joe Cerchiaro, drummer and

Chris Bittner, saxophone. Master of ceremonies for the day will be Flynn Surratt.

Seating on the courthouse green is limited so remember to bring a lawn chair.

The 2010 Indian Summer Festival, sponsored by Historic Hertford, Inc., offers a variety of craft and food vendors, and fun-filled activities for children in addition to the entertainment.
