Those who’d like to spend their time at the Chowan County Regional Fair in Edenton as walking spectators are in luck this year because low-cost tickets will be available just for them.

For only $10, a non-ride ticket will be offered at the gate in cooperation with midway operator Playworld on the first three nights of the fair to those who are age 35 and older.

“We hope that this offer will allow more people to come to the fair,” said John Chilcoat, board vice president for the 65th annual fair that takes place Sept. 25-29. “Anyone age 65 and older will be admitted free on Thursday night only.”

Admission price for those wishing to enjoy the rides will be $18 at the gate. Discount tickets for $15 are available at area Duck Thru outlets now through Sept. 22.

E.C. Toppin, fair president, said that the special ticket was being offered in response to requests from the public.

“People have been asking us if we could offer something like that,” Toppin said. He said that the fair board issued a special non-ride ticket that was offered last year on the fair’s opening night but that due to bad weather few were purchased.

“We still think this is a good idea,” Toppin said. “So we’re going to try again.”

Among those planning to take advantage of the special tickets will be Kermit Layton and his wife.

“I think that it (reduced price ticket) makes a lot of sense for people that just want to go and look around, enjoy some carny food, and have some fun, but won’t be riding anything,” Layton said. “I’m glad to hear they’re doing that.”

Another special ticket will also be available this year on Wednesday, Sept. 25 that will be Military Appreciation Night. These $10 tickets must also be purchased at the gate.

Chilcoat said that these tickets would be made available to active duty military personnel and their families. Military identification will need to be shown at the time of purchase, he said.

“A special ticket booth will be set up for this event to make the entry process go much smoother, and must be used to get the discount,” Chilcoat said. “This ticket is good for everything as is our regular one price gate ticket that costs $18.”

Chilcoat said that in honor of servicemen and women attending the fair that night, a special fireworks show is planned.

Other exciting fair events are scheduled to include the Eudora Petting Zoo and Camel Rides, Senior Citizens’ Fun Day, the Albemarle’s Got Talent show presented by the Chowan County 4-H, pony rides, a mechanical bull, the Farmer for a Day program sponsored by the Chowan County Junior Fair Board, peanut picking and hay baling demonstrations, as well as Showboat Marionettes.

Those who love music will be able to enjoy jazz, blues and soft rock sounds of Deacon Blues to the Southern Rock and country sounds of the Moonshine Band on Wednesday evening. Gospel music will be performed on Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon.

Two special pageants, the Little Miss Pageant and the Miss Chowan County Regional Fair Pageant, will be back again this year.

The midway will open at 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon and close at midnight on Saturday.
