Patience and precision are integral to her craft.
As Laura DeNunzio manipulates the mapp gas canister in her grip, the hot torch melts colorful glass around a stainless steel mandrel. Within minutes a glass rod has been formed into an exceptional piece of art that can fit in the palm of your hand.
“Every bead is an individual design,” said DeNunzio who does not use molds in the creation of her flamework beads.
Incorporating the beads with Swarovski crystal and sterling silver, she fashions elegant earrings, necklaces, bracelets and pendants.
DeNunzio has produced beads for more than six years. Scanning instructional books and viewing videos on YouTube, the artisan quickly discovered an affinity for the craft.
DeNunzio said that she learned that it is imperative to use glass rods that have the exact same coefficient of expansion. It is also important to make sure the glass cools within the correct interval of time to prevent cracking.
Her creations have delighted her daughters who have worn her customized jewelry to their proms.
A member of the Albemarle Craftsman’s Guild, DeNunzio has showcased her works at the Guild’s annual fair since 2007. Her work is also on display at the Arts of the Albemarle , the Museum Gift Shop at the Museum of the Albemarle, the Perquimans Arts League and the Chowan Arts Council.
In addition to flamework beads, the craftswoman also produces fused glass and artistic rubber stamping.
DeNunzio started artistic rubber stamping after reading an article in a magazine that described ways to decorate Christmas packages more than two decades ago. She utilizes this craft technique on paper, clothing, cards and collage wall art.
DeNunzio said she is inspired by trips to the ocean to create her glass wind chimes.
“I love the ocean.”
DeNunzio moved to Elizabeth City from Pittsburgh , Pa , with her husband, Neil, who is a physician, 26 years ago. She worked as a nurse commuting to Childrens Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Va., until 1994. Her attention to detail while serving in the health care field is reflected in her crafting process which often requires exactness when working with glass.
She likes creating art with her four children and savors making a special ornament for each of them every Christmas. At the completion of a crafting project, DeNunzio says she feels a sense of accomplishment.
“I really enjoy it.”
