Perquimans County Schools

The Perquimans County Schools Foundation announces the availability of the following scholarships for high school seniors attending Perquimans High School. Deadline to apply for each scholarship is in March 5, 2012.

The Perquimans County Schools Foundation Scholarship - The Perquimans County Schools Foundation selects one student each year to award a $1,000 scholarship which is renewable for the four years recipient is in college. Recipients are selected based on academic standards, community service and character.

• The Bogue Scholarship – The Bogue Scholarship of $2500 is given by Mr. and Mrs. William A. Bogue, Jr. in memory of his father William A. Bogue and the descendants of the first William Bogue of Perquimans.

• Claude Brinn Male and Female Athletic Scholarships. The Perquimans County Schools Athletic Boosters funds a $500 scholarship for a male and female athlete each year. Recipients participate in at least two sports, maintain high academic standards throughout their tenure in high school, and are noted for their outstanding sportsmanship.

• Shearman Athletic Scholarship – Dave Shearman, a Perquimans County resident, sponsors the annual Shearman Athletic Scholarship of $500 to a PCHS athlete who participates in at least one sport, has no disciplinary referrals and maintains high academic standards.

• Rhonda Gregory Business Scholarship– This $1,000 scholarship, sponsored by Danny and Rhonda Gregory, is offered to a PCHS senior planning to attend College of the Albemarle and entering the field of business.

• Bessie Smith Harrell Scholarship – The Bessie Smith Harrell Scholarship of $750 is given in honor of Bessie Smith Harrell. The intent of the donor, David Jordan, is that this award will encourage studying basic or applied fields of science by students.

• Special Education Teacher Scholarship – This scholarship, sponsored by Perquimans County Schools Foundation Inc., is intended address the shortage of special education teachers by encouraging and assisting a PCHS student intending to major in special education at a College or University in North Carolina. The recipient will be encouraged to return to PCHS to teach special education.

• The Walker and Marjorie Rayburn Scholarship — The purpose of the Walker and Marjorie Rayburn Scholarship is to give an opportunity for a graduate of Perquimans County High School to attend a college away from home, who would otherwise not be likely to do so. This is intended to be a needs based scholarship and will be $5,000 per year for four years. The application should have a 3.0 GPA and should be involved in leadership roles in the school and community.

• The Harvey and Elizabeth Alter Science Scholarship — This $3,000 scholarship is sponsored by Harvey and Elizabeth Alter and is available to a male ($1,500) and a female ($1,500) student graduating from Perquimans High School accepted to study basic science in a community college and/or four-year university. Financial need is a consideration.

• The Eugene Rountree, Sr. Scholarship — The $250 scholarship in memory of Eugene Rountree, Sr. is sponsored by the Inter-County Fire Department and is available to a high school student. Mr. Rountree was a chartered member and retired Fire Chief of the Inter-County Volunteer Fire Department with more than four decades of service. First Priority to: Junior Firefighters of Perquimans County (or son or daughter of a firefighter.)

• The Suzanne Towe Haste Merit Award and Exhibit Scholarship — The Merit award recognizes students of outstanding ability who will be majoring in the Arts in college or have applied to a summer program or camp for the arts. All applicants will participate in an exhibit, to take place at the Perquimans Arts League Gallery.

Schools Foundation funds 
requests from teachers

The Perquimans County Schools Foundation, in its regularly scheduled quarterly meeting, funded the following requests from educators in Perquimans County Schools:

• A $1,200 request from music and art educator Connie Ashley for support in community performances by students attending Perquimans County Central School.

• A $500 request from PCHS Fine Arts Department educator Lynwood Winslow to assist in funding for students to attend the North Carolina High School All-State Chorus competition.

• A $2,000 request from PCMS media coordinator Cindy Phthisic for the purchase of an announcement station for the lobby at Perquimans Middle School.

• A $7,600 request from Perquimans Central School to fund swimming lessons at the YMCA for all kindergarten students in May 2012.
