The Albemarle Homeschool Support League (AHSL) announced the first place winners in each age group for the AHSL Science Fair held on Feb. 14.
The winners with their project titles are:
• K to 2nd Grade:
Erika Sawyer (92 points) “Secret Messages.”
• 3rd -5th Grade:
Gabrielle and Isabelle Wilson (80 points) “Parachutes - Does Size Matter?”
Charity Martin (80 points) “Dyeing Fabric with Beets.”
• 6th - 8th Grade:
Paul Sawyer (99 points) “Effect of Ultraviolet Light on Yeast.”
• 9th - 12th Grade:
Caleb Weeks (89 points) “Ways to Improve My Bow Technique.”
Courtney Jennings awarded full scholarship
Courtney Jennings, granddaughter of Clarence and Ruth Jennings of Weeksville, is the 16th recipient of the J. Hunter and Mabel C. Strickland Memorial Full Endowed Scholarship.
This scholarship is awarded to a recipient who exhibits a strong academic background, community involvement, leadership, and a commitment to helping others. Jennings has been active in a variety of school and church activities while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
She has been accepted into the Bachelor of Science, Biology program at Campbell University and intends to become a physician’s assistant specializing in pediatrics. The Strickland Scholarship covers all tuition, room, parking and dining costs, and a portion of book costs for the entire four years of undergraduate study.
She is the daughter of Jeff and Lou Jennings of Clayton and will graduate from Clayton High School in Johnston County in June 2012.
Gregory attends leadership conference
Alexa Gregory attended the Hugh O’ Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Conference at N.C. State University this past summer. She is from Elizabeth City and is currently attending the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.
As an alumni of the HOBY conference, she is working to raise support and awareness about this opportunity for rising juniors in high school. The students spend a weekend learning about themselves and how they can contribute to their own school and community as leaders.
AgCarolina accepting scholarship applications
AgCarolina Financial has announced that twenty-seven college scholarships will be available to children or grandchildren whose parents are customers or employees of the cooperative. The scholarship program is part of the cooperative’s corporate giving program, the Fund for Rural North Carolina.
• Five $2,000 scholarships will be available to students who are pursuing an agriculture-related degree at North Carolina State University (NCSU). Application due date is April 15.
• Five $750 scholarships will be awarded to students who are enrolled in the North Carolina State University Ag Institute. Due date is April 15.
• Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing an agriculture-related degree at North Carolina A&T State University. Applicants must reside in eastern North Carolina. Application due date is April 15.
• Five recipients will be awarded scholarships of $750 each to any community college within the State of North Carolina. Due date is April 30.
• Five recipients will be awarded scholarships of $1,000 each to any four-year college or university within the State of NC. Scholarships will be non-degree specific. Due date is April 30.
• Five scholarships in the amount of $500 each will be awarded to any high school senior who is a FFA member, residing in eastern North Carolina with plans to attend a four year college or university. Due date is April 30.

Infinger, White achieve Chowan Dean’s List
Chowan University officially announced the Fall 2011 semester’s Dean’s List honorees. Dean’s List winners have accomplished a grade point average between 3.25 and 3.79 for the semester. The following local students are Shelby Infinger of Camden, a freshman, and Lindsey White of Aydlett, a senior; both are majoring in Business Administration Accounting.
Hannah Twiddy achieves UNC’s Dean’s List
Hannah M. Twiddy of Elizabeth City and a sophomore achieved the Dean’s List at UNC, Wilmington, for Fall Semester 2011. Her parents are Michael and Ann Twiddy of Elizabeth City. She graduated in 2010 from Victory Christian School in Elizabeth City.
NACF accepting scholarship applications
The board of directors of the Northern Albemarle Community Foundation is currently accepting applications for both the Elizabeth City Jaycees Scholarship and the Bertha Sawyer and Winfred Meiggs Scholarship, according to Kathryn Scott, board president.
Scholarships are available for graduating high school students meeting various eligibility requirements detailed by county on nccommunityfoundation.org, where applications can be downloaded. Applications also may be available at area high schools or by contacting Senior Associate, Peggy Birkemeier at the Northeast office by phone, 491-8166, or email:pbirk@nccommunityfoundation.org. The deadline for submitting applications to these two funds is March 30. Local students are eligible to apply for other scholarship funds administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation as listed by their county name.
The Northern Albemarle Community Foundation, serving Camden, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties, is an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation. In addition to Scott, the Scholarship Committee, chaired by Larry Glasscock, works with fund holders to ensure compliance with federal regulations.
The North Carolina Community Foundation has awarded nearly $829,000 in scholarships and educational grants for academic year 2011-2012. The NCCF has awarded $610,929 in direct scholarship aid to students from across North Carolina, representing 332 scholarships to 291 students. Of these, 105 scholarships were awarded to first-generation college students.
The NCCF also has contributed another $217,779 in grant money to educational institutions for the purpose of awarding scholarships to students attending these schools.
