The American Legion annually sponsors the National High School Oratorical Contest on the United States Constitution. Locally the John A. Holmes High School JROTC hosted the event on Friday, Dec. 14, on behalf of American legion Post 40. There were two contestants in this final stage of the JAHHS contest.

The first place winner was Razi Lane and second place was Hillary Morgan. American Legion Post 40 Commander Gerry DiNunzio presented the winners checks of $100 for first place and $75 for second place as well as trophies.

Winner Razi Lane will move on to represent Post 40 at the District 1 level competition to be held in Edenton 11 in January 2013 at the old Courthouse 10 a.m. If Razi is fortunate enough to win at the District level, he will advance to the Department of North Carolina Division One Oratorical Contest to also be held in Edenton 9 in February 2013. The winner at the Division level moves on to the State Oratorical Contest. State winners will meet in Indianapolis, Ind., for the National American Legion finals. The American Legion Awards several scholarships, the top three are $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000.

Moyock’s Sara Allman 
makes honors list

Sara N. Allman of Moyock made the Honor’s List at Randolph Community College for the 2012 fall semester.

To be eligible, a student must complete at least 12 credit hours for the session, excluding Developmental Studies hours and proficiency hours with no incompletes, and earn a grade point average of 3.00-3.49 for the Honor List.
