Coast Guard of f icials speak on safety
Officials from Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads, Va. and the Army Corps of Engineers spoke to the media about lock operations and boating safety on Oct. 29. The lock connects the southern branch of the Elizabeth River and the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal, and is one of the gateways within the northern Intracoastal Waterway.
Joel Scussel, the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Project manager, spoke at the event and reminded mariners of safety procedures to follow while transiting the lock. He reminded mariners to monitor marine radio Channel 13, follow the directions of the lock operator, and wait for a green navigation light when entering the lock. Officials also spoke about safe boating practices at all times, including wearing life jackets, keeping a working marine band radio and maintaining safety equipment.
