Health Tip: Fungal Infections

WEDNESDAY, March 2 (HealthDay News) -- Fungal nail infections are most often seen in adults, in the toenails more than fingernails. Since they may recur often and may be difficult to treat, prevention is the best measure.

People who frequent public swimming pools, gyms, or shower rooms, and people who perspire a great deal commonly have fungal infections because the fungi thrive in warm, moist areas. The risk of getting a fungal infection is increased by closed-in footwear, prolonged moist skin, and minor skin or nail injuries.

According to the National Library of Medicine, good general health and hygiene help prevent fungal infections. Take proper care of your nails, and wash and dry the hands and feet thoroughly after possible contact with any fungal infection.
