Ward: Swayne was robbed at Mike's Country Store ATM

Four men arrested Saturday in the robbery of a volunteer fire chief were apprehended after the chief followed the suspects in his vehicle and used his hand-held radio to notify police.
The four who were arrested are each students at Elizabeth City State University, said Lt. Bill Ward, an investigator with the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office.
Cordero Lovejoy, 20, of 1008 Wood St., Elizabeth City, Brandon James Lucas, 18, of 307 B University Tower, Kristopher Marco Williams, 19, of 304 B University Tower and Heath Ryan Grant, 19, of 305 University Tower, were each arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon Saturday, Ward said.
At around 4:45 a.m. Saturday, Inter-County volunteer fire chief Robert Swayne stopped to withdraw cash from the ATM at Mike's Country Store off U.S. Highway 17 South and Simpson Ditch Road. That's when the four suspects spotted Swayne and decided to rob him, Ward said.
"He (Swayne) was a target of opportunity," said Ward, adding the suspects were traveling on U.S. 17 when they spotted Swayne. "They parked beside the store opposite of the ATM."
Ward said it was Lovejoy who actually pulled a pistol on Swayne.
While the suspects made away with an disclosed amount of Swayne's cash, as well as his cell phone, they did not take his hand-held radio that he uses in his role as a fireman. When the suspects drove away from the scene Swayne got in his vehicle and began following them, Ward said. Swayne also used his radio to notify the sheriff's office of what had happened. Sheriff's deputies, with assistance from Elizabeth City police, shortly after apprehended the suspects at the intersection of Body Road and Halstead Boulevard, Ward said.

First of all to reply to YoMomma the comment you made about what are they teaching out at ECSU? In my opinion the university is not resposible for the actions of these students so i feel that your comment is irrelevant to the issue at hand. As far as their being rapist and shooters that is not true most of the crimes that are on the campus come from non-students and envious townies, as far as you not wanting the university to be here is ignorant on your part because that shows how selfish you are because a majority of the students here are here for an education to better themselves and to show society that they do make a difference. So it is not the fault of the university, they just happen to be students!

Good evening everybody, I would like to quip in on a small issue that has bothered this European transplant..."yo momma" relates in the 5:57 post that this matter should be relagated to the past and spoken of no more; but it seems if events of the last few days can be forgotten so easily, how come events that ceased 150 years ago get thrown in peoples faces daily, even still? I am all for putting the past in the past, and getting some positive results in the near future.

Theres no way i can justify there actions, but i know if i wouldn't haved passed out due to previous actions, i would have been able to talk to them and make them change their minds. But the system is so messed up, dat myself and a couple others were going to be arrested, just for gathering up all of our friends belongings so they wouldnt be thrown in the trash by the so called campus police. Is that justice

YO Mama, don't feed into the negativtity that you read, I know of EC citizens robbing students on campus, much doesn't go by my ears because I have contacts in the city and on campus. However, what they did can't be justified, that fire chief did nothing to them. As far as the police go, this is another topic that we need to pursue in another conversation, because I have been victim to the new CAT policy of the police in Elizabeth City. To sum it up I've been pulled for not wearing a seatbelt and then asked if it was okay to search my vehicle, I complied because I had nothing illegal, but I don't believe that there was true probable cause, my only mistake was being a black male driving, and the policy is coming to reflect racism on the department part, eventhough I commend the department for stepping up on crime, I just don't like some of their procedures for doing so.
