CURRITUCK — Currituck County Schools' new attendance zones could affect middle schools as well as elementary schools.
The new attendance zones were adopted by the Currituck County Board of Education in January to accommodate two new schools for the 2008-09 school year: Jarvisburg Elementary and Shawboro Elementary.
Jarvisburg Elementary altered the attendance zone of Dr. W.T. Griggs Elementary, in Poplar Branch, while Shawboro Elementary altered the attendance zones of Moyock Elementary and Central Elementary.
While the elementary schools that feed the middle schools have not changed, changes in the attendance zones may lead to middle school students attending different schools in the fall.
The Board of Education will accept transfer requests from parents of Currituck County Middle School students who have been reassigned to Moyock Middle School in 2008-09.
In addition, transfer requests will be available to parents of rising fifth-graders at Moyock Elementary who wish to have their children attend Shawboro Elementary.
In the event that Shawboro Elementary is not completed before Aug. 25, all students, except for rising fifth-graders from Moyock, who are zoned to attend Shawboro, will begin the year at The J.P. Knapp School until the new school is ready.
Transfer request forms can be downloaded from at currituck.k12.nc.us or at school district's central office. The completed form should be sent to Ron Leigh or e-mailed to rleigh@currituck.k12.nc.us or kwittenburg@currituck.k12.nc.us.
For more information, call the central office at 232-2223 or your child's school.
