A Pasquotank County office-seeker met Friday's deadline to get his name on the November ballot.
But whether he has enough valid signatures won't be known until sometime this week, according to Elections Director Linda Page.
Page said Tom Memolo's petition to get on the fall general election ballot includes 22 pages of signatures.
Memolo, a self-described Independent, is seeking to run as an unaffiliated candidate for the southern outside seat on the county's board of commissioners.
That seat is held by incumbent Bill Trueblood, who won the Democratic primary unopposed.
If Memolo is successful, southern outside district voters in Mt. Hermon, Nixonton and Salem townships will choose between Memolo and Trueblood to represent them the next four years.
Trueblood, a Weeksville resident and former area postmaster, is seeking his third term.
For Memolo, it is his first crack at running for public office.
Memolo said he obtained 340 signatures, well more than the 281 minimum he needs to make the ballot.
Page said 281 represents 4 percent of the total number of registered voters in that district — the minimum number of valid signatures required.
Page said she and Deputy Director Bonnie Godfrey will be trying to verify that signatures represent registered voters.
She said on Monday, they found a few signatures of residents who were not registered.
Memolo, a 77-year-old retired Navy veteran and retired Pasquotank fire marshal, said he considers himself a fiscal conservative who will fight to keep taxes low for senior citizens and those on low fixed-incomes.
