Letter: Barkley's gift created pavilion

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

I was saddened to read of the recent death of Col. Craig Barkley. I wonder how many people in our town realize that we would not have the "Dome Pavilion" at Waterfront Park had it not been for Craig.

While renovating the old hospital building, he wanted to preserve the historic dome, and he envisioned a use for it as a public gazebo in Waterfront Park. He donated the dome to the city, and then persevered until Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc., took it on as a project — to build the pavilion. This has been a focal point for many riverfront activities through the years.

Our town owes Col. Craig Barkley a debt of gratitude for his vision and perseverance.
