An Elizabeth City resident was hospitalized Tuesday after his truck left the highway and hit a ditch, according to N.C. Highway Patrol.
William Barkwell Bateman, 78, of Nixonton Road, Elizabeth City, was driving his 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck east on Nixonton Road when the vehicle apparently veered off and ran into a ditch, Trooper J.K. Jones said.
By the time Jones arrived, Bateman had been transported by Nightingale helicopter to a hospital for medical attention.
The trooper said he would not know why Bateman drove off the road or the extent of his injuries until he is able to interview him.
Jones said the collision did not appear to have been caused by excessive speed.

"EC wreck sends man to hospital accident"
Huh?
I think you dropped some words. Shouldn't be "to ALBEMARLE hospital BY accident?"
