An Elizabeth City man who police say raped a woman near the end of July has been formally charged with statutory rape.

Tony Tyrone Rice Jr., 23, of the 900 block of West Main Street, was arrested Monday, Aug. 11, according to an arrest report.

Police said the incident that led to Rice's arrest occurred inside a residence, but declined to provide further details. Rice is being held without bond at Albemarle District Jail.
