A former city councilman was arrested Monday and charged with communicating threats.

Michael Brooks, 50, of the 100 block of Carver St., Elizabeth City, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of making threats, according to an arrest report.

Pasquotank County Sheriff Randy Cartwright said the arrest followed an incident at DRS Technologies on Aug. 7, during which Brooks allegedly threatened an employee of the defense contractor.

Cartwright said Brooks apparently became angry after being fired from the company.

The arrest warrant was sought by John Edward Anderson, whose address is listed as 1060 Consolidated Road.

According to the arrest warrant, Brooks threatened Anderson by "making a shooting motion with his finger (toward him) and saying, 'I will get you.'" Brooks further told Anderson, "I am going to get you, you know I am going to get you," the warrant states.

The warrant initially went to the sheriff's office but later went to the Elizabeth City Police Department, whose personnel served it on Monday.

Reached Tuesday, Brooks said there was more to the story than what's stated on the warrant. He did not elaborate.

"This is fabricated, but (the truth) will come out," he said. "I look forward to vindicating a lie."

Brooks was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Pasquotank County District Court on Sept. 15.

Brooks served a single term on City Council. He was elected to a Third Ward seat in 2005 but defeated in his bid for re-election in October 2007.

Brooks challenged the results of the election, but state elections officials dismissed the complaint.

Earlier this year, he ran unsuccessfully in a special election for a vacant Third Ward council seat.
