"Proof" proves a couple of things. First, even the best adaptation of a successful play can't always capture the electrifying theatricality of its source. Second, it's possible to give an excellent performance, even when an actor is badly miscast. The actor is Gwyneth Paltrow, who stars as Catherine, the woebegone daughter of Robert (Anthony Hopkins), a world-famous mathematician, who turned the numbers world on its ear by the time he was 22. Catherine has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a mathematical genious. On the eve of her 27th birthday, Catherine must deal not only with the arrival of her estranged sister, but also with the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the mathematician's 103 notebooks. Catherine explores the links between genious and madness, the tender relationships between fathers and daughters and the nature of truth and family.
