CURRITUCK — A four-car accident with no reported injuries at Point Harbor on Caratoke Highway added to slowdowns for already creeping beach-bound traffic Saturday afternoon.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper W.B. Copeland said a vehicle that slowed in backed-up traffic was hit from behind, causing four vehicles to collide at about 1 p.m. near the BP station.

He estimated $10,000 in combined damage for all four vehicles containing beach-bound vacationers. The two middle vehicles, one with a crunched-up hood and the other a bent back fender, sustained the most damage. All the vehicles had pulled off the road into a nearby shopping center by the time Copeland arrived at the scene, he said.

Copeland said his response time to the accident was slowed by traffic backed up from Diggers Dungeon in Poplar Branch. Copeland said he arrived 35 to 40 minutes later than normal after driving in the middle turn lane, sirens on, through stopped traffic.
