The Camden County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in South Mills early Tuesday that sent one man to the hospital.
Frank Crank, 45, of the 100 block of Lilly Road in South Mills was shot about 5:30 a.m. as he left his home to go to work, according to a sheriff’s office release.
Crank’s injuries are not life threatening, and he was flown by Nightingale helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va. for treatment.
Sheriff Tony Perry said his office had persons of interest in the case.
"Hopefully it’s a good lead," Perry said Tuesday afternoon.
Officials believe Crank’s assailant arrived at his house through a nearby bean field. It appears the assailant left the same way, and fled in a vehicle parked on a nearby road. Perry said his office searched for Crank’s assailant until about 8:15 a.m. Tuesday but was unable to locate him.
The Elizabeth City Police Department and Currituck County Sheriff’s Office had K-9 units on the scene as part of the search. A Blackwater Worldwide helicopter also assisted in the search, the sheriff’s release states.
