WILMINGTON — The Coast Guard is searching Friday for a missing 14-year-old after his kayak was found near the Wright Memorial Bridge in Kitty Hawk.

Currituck County 911 dispatchers contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders at about 7:25 p.m. reporting the teen had borrowed a friend’s kayak at 10 a.m., and at about 11 a.m., a kayak was found with a cell phone and fishing gear aboard.

Sector watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and dispatched crews aboard a 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to assist.

Currituck County Sheriff’s Office personnel were assisting in a shoreside search.

The teen was reportedly not wearing a life jacket or shirt and was wearing dark blue denim shorts.

Further details were not made available.
