How would you describe your job? I'm a child-care teacher. I provide curriculum for the classroom, plan schedules, provide basic care for the children every day. I communicate with the parents and (about) any director problems I may be having.
Joyce Turner, age 51 Camden Child-Care Teacher Northeastern Community Development Corporation, 17 years |
Has your job been affected by changes in technology or other changes? We're seeing children less active today. They are more prone to sit in front of the television and play hand-held games. They are becoming more aggressive because of TV viewing and shows that they watch. Children just don't play like as children used to play.
Besides salary, what benefits do you derive from your work? The enjoyment of being with young children. I enjoy children, and it's a pleasure to watch them grow and change and see that they are gaining from their everyday experiences. Every day's a challenge; nothing is the same. You come in every day not knowing what to expect.
What are the long-term or indirect benefits of your job? Hopefully, seeing these children grow up and they have been successful — that day care has been a good experience for them. And for myself, just the pleasure of knowing that I have made an impact on that child's life.
How do you see your job benefiting the larger community? It provides a good place for parents to drop their kids off, knowing that they are well taken care of. It creates jobs. There are more jobs being created (filled) because of this center. Overall, it is a good place for parents and their family.
