Jon Van Dalsum originally began his career in floor covering as a temporary worker over 30 years ago. "To tell you the truth, I enjoy it," Van Dalsum said. "It's an interesting field. You get to meet a lot of people with different lifestyles and help them find what they need."

Van Dalsum, originally from Washington, D.C., and his wife Melba are the owners of Carpet Connection of Elizabeth City. The business sells and installs floor coverings at discount prices, including ceramic tiles, laminate floors, vinyl floor covering, hardwood floors and carpeting. "All our installers are factory-trained and we offer free estimates, as well as free delivery," Van Dalsum said.

The company has been business for about 8 years and has more than $100,000 in inventory ready for immediate delivery. Some of the brands they carry include Mohawk, Shaw, Beaulieu carpets, Mannington, Congolium, Armstrong Vinyl, hardwood and laminates by Columbia, Mannington, Bruce and many others. Carpet Connection has expanded since opening carrying a full line of window treatments from Hunter Douglas, Prestige and others. They are a member of a national buying group and can offer you a complete line of name brands for truly less money.

They offer a complete line of interior and exterior light fixtures and complete lighting packages for new construction, and can even design your kitchen and the interior of your home.

Thanks to proper lighting, Melba Van Dalsum guarantees that you will see all the coverings and fixtures exactly as it will appear in your residence. "Our showroom doesn't have fluorescent lights," she said, "so everything looks like it does in your home." Jon Van Dalsum came to Elizabeth City 35 years ago, he says, and decided to stay. "I met my wife on a blind date and never left," he said.

Prior to opening Carpet Connection, Van Dalsum managed another local flooring company for about 20 years. Carpet Connection's services reach eight counties in Northeastern North Carolina and Tidewater, V.A., and includes delivery and installation.
