Blood drive. The Greater Albemarle Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in front of the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Elizabeth City today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 1-800-GIVELIFE.

Veterans ceremony at Memorial Park. American Legion Post 288 in Coinjock will host a Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Coinjock today at 11 a.m. C. Michael Warren, superintendent of Currituck County Schools, will be the speaker. For more info, call Bob Kohler at 232-8723.

Chowan Memorial Day service. Edward G. Bond Post 40 of the American Legion will sponsor a Memorial Day service at the Chowan County Veterans Memorial at the corner of Queen and Court streets, Edenton, today at 11 a.m.

Memorial Day services. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6060 will sponsor a Memorial Day ceremony at New Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City today at 11 a.m. Ret. Army Staff Sgt. Daniel Serik of the Army National Guard will also sponsor a Memorial Day observance at Westlawn Cemetery today at 1 p.m.

Holiday trash schedule. Because of the Memorial Day, the city of Elizabeth City Public Works Department will be closed Monday. That day's trash will be picked up Tuesday.

Pasquotank commissioners to meet. The Pasquotank Board of Commissioners will hold a budget work session in the commissioners boardroom of the county courthouse Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Riverside Area Community Watch to meet. The Riverside Area Community Watch group will meet at Riverside United Methodist Church Tuesday at 7 p.m. Chris Pointer of Albemarle District Jail will be the speaker. For more info, call 335-4321 or 334-1546.

Camden to hold budget sessions. The Camden County Board of Commissioners will hold budget work sessions in the Historic Courtroom of the county courthouse Tuesday, at 7 p.m. and Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m.

EC-Pasquotank school board to meet. The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Board of Education will meet to discuss next year's local expense budget Tuesday in the multipurpose room at Pasquotank Elementary School following the annual student recognition program at 6 p.m.

COA to offer job skills class. College of The Albemarle's Human Resources Development Program will offer an employability skills class beginning Tuesday. Classes meet Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in room B-210 on the Elizabeth City campus. The cost is $55 plus a $5 computer usage fee. Older Adults Day. Albemarle Family YMCA will host Older Adults Day Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon. Senior citizens can receive a free fitness assessment, blood pressure test, and chair exercise demonstration.

Nature's Organic Bounty open house. The Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon-cutting and open house for Nature's Organic Bounty in the Ken-Nix Plaza, U.S. Highway 17 South, Elizabeth City, Thursday at 5 p.m.

Alzheimer's support group to meet. The Elizabeth City Area Alzheimer's Disease Support Group will meet at the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Senior Center, Thursday at 2 p.m. For more information, call 338-3419.

Red Cross lifeguard class. The Greater Albemarle Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor a lifeguard class beginning Friday. Registrants must be at least 15 years old and pass a pre-test. To register, call 335-2185. Women in Transition' grants. The Albemarle Plantation Women's Club will award "Women in Transition" grants of up to $1,000 to female residents of Perquimans County who are over 18, want to further their careers and/or education, and demonstrate financial need. Applications must be received by Friday, and winners will be announced June 30.

Makeup day for school lockdowns. Northside Elementary School, Elizabeth City Middle School and Pasquotank County High School will hold a makeup day on Saturday for the day missed because of school lockdowns on Friday, April 27. All students will be released two hours early that day.

NHS to hold tutoring for end-of-course tests. Northeastern High School will host tutoring for the upcoming end-of-course tests Saturday, June 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Information is available from teachers of particular courses.

Immigration workshop. The Elizabeth City District United Methodist Women will present a workshop entitled "The Effects of Immigration on Society" at Edenton United Methodist Church, Saturday, June 2 at 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Marcia Garcia of the N.C. Office of Immigration and Ben Rose, director of the Chowan County Department of Social Services will be the speakers.

Pasquotank Board of Elections to meet. The Pasquotank County Board of Elections will meet at 426 McArthur Drive Tuesday, June 5 at 9 a.m.

ECSU summer school registration. Registration for summer school at Elizabeth City State University will be held at the K.E. White Center Monday, June 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Classes will begin at 8 a.m. June 5. DOT to close roadway. The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a portion of State Route 1117 south of Gatesville for bridge maintenance starting Monday, June 4 at 8 a.m. and ending Friday, June 8 at 8 a.m.

Life Line screening. Residents of the Tyner community will be offered free stroke screenings by Life Line Screenings at Nixon Catering Service in Tyner Tuesday, June 5. Currituck Child Find. The Currituck County Schools will be conducting "Child Find" screenings at Knapp Elementary School Monday, June 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Child Find is an effort to locate children with disabilities and those in need of special education and related services. Gang awareness training. The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Schools, in coordination with the Elizabeth City Police Department, are sponsoring mandatory gang awareness training for all district staff on Tuesday, June 12 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Floyd L. Robinson Auditorium at the Fine Arts Complex on Weeksville Road.

Flag retirement ceremony. American Legion Post 40 will conduct a flag retirement ceremony at the post home in Edenton, Tuesday, June 12 at 5:30 p.m. A collection box will be posted in front of Post 40 for the drop off of torn or faded American flags.

PAC summer art programs. The Pasquotank Arts Council is currently enrolling students for its summer art/drama camp for ages 6-12 Monday through Friday, June 18-22; ArtSmart for ages 3-1/2-5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, June 12; music lessons; and summer art classes for ages 6-9 and 10-14 that begin in June. ECSU student orientation. Elizabeth City State University will hold orientation for new students June 14-15, July 12-13 and Aug. 16-17. YMCA to offer youth camp. Albemarle Family YMCA is currently taking registrations for its nine-week summer camp that starts Monday, June 18; the two sessions of its cheerleading camp, one June 25-29 and the other July 16-20; and its micro sports camp from July 23-27 for children ages 3-5. Baby-sitting course. The Currituck Center of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor a baby-sitting course for youth ages 12 and older Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, June 18, 19 and 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Cost is $15 and includes daily refreshments, program materials, supplies and CPR certification costs. For more information, call 232-2261.

Disabled adults group to meet. A support group for disabled adults will meet in Room 2 of Albemarle Hospital's Education Department Tuesday, June 26 at 7 p.m.

'Re-entry' scholarships for women. The Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women's Club is accepting applications for "re-entry scholarships." Applicants must be female, at least 25, and live in Dare, Currituck or surrounding counties and be a U.S. citizen. Applications are available from school financial aid officer or by contacting Fran Kapinos at 202-8467 or Donna Bissell at 202-1216. The deadline is June 30.

Witherspoon-Harris award nominees. The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Community Relations Commission is seeking nominees for its Witherspoon-Harris Community Contribution Recognition Award. Nominees must reside in Elizabeth City or Pasquotank County and have made extraordinary community service contributions. Forms may be picked up in the City Clerk's office at City Hall.

Treasure Point 4-H Camp fund. The Camden County 4-H Foundation has established a "Treasure Point 4-H Camp Re-building fund" to raise money to replace the log cabin destroyed by arsonists in early November. Make checks payable to the Camden County 4-H Foundation and send to either the Camden Center of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service or the Bank of Currituck in Camden.
