Five suspects remain in jail following their arrest last week on charges of robbing a woman and her son at their Pasquotank County home.

No one was injured in the incident, which took place in a mobile home park on Spruill Drive about 1 a.m. Friday, Sheriff Randy Cartwright said.

The woman and her 7-year-old son were at home when the woman said she began hearing noises at her door, Cartwright said. When she left her bedroom to see what was causing the noise, the woman said she saw two men in dark clothing and wearing hooded sweatshirts with white T-shirts covering their faces coming through the front door.

The woman said the suspects forced her and her son to go into the bathroom of their house, Cartwright said. There they listened to doors being opened and objects being moved, he said.

After the men left, the woman called 911 and gave dispatchers a description of the vehicle in which the men drove off, Cartwright said.

A deputy soon spotted a white Ford Windstar van, which matched the description of the suspects' vehicle, near the intersection of Main Street Extended and Hughes Boulevard, Cartwright said. The deputy tried to stop the van, but it sped off in the direction of Harrell Street.

During the pursuit, the deputy saw passengers in the vehicle throwing items from the van, Cartwright said. Items recovered following the pursuit included three handguns — a .44-caliber handgun, a 9 mm Beretta and .22-caliber revolver — and a Sony PSP portable game system that authorities believe was stolen from the home on Spruill Drive.

The van finally stopped in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven convenience store on West Church Street and the five occupants surrendered without incident. All five have been charged with first-degree burglary, armed robbery and second-degree kidnapping.

The suspects include:

• Larry Cecil Chesson, 28, of 1500 River Road;

• Darin Syntel Royle, 25, of the 700 block of Washington Street;

• Leselle Cornelius Spencer III, 23, of 1403 River Road;

• Marquise Winston, 17, of the 800 block of Parkview Drive; and

• Kenneth Trevar Lewis, 29, of the 900 block of Bartlett Avenue.

Chesson, who is believed to have been the driver of the van, also has been charged with fleeing to elude arrest. He was being held at Albemarle District Jail Tuesday in lieu of a $252,000 secured bond. Spencer and Lewis were both at ADJ being held in lieu of $250,000 bonds, Royle was being held in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond, and Winston was being detained in lieu of a $251,000 secured bond.

During the robbery, the suspects allegedly took a one-gallon bucket of loose change, the portable game system and a cell phone, according to the sheriff and court records. The estimated value of the items was $215.

Cartwright said the robbery wasn't typical. Usually thieves won't target a home that is occupied, he said.

His office believes the suspects went into the mobile home park on Spruill Drive with the intention of committing a robbery, but may not have decided on which home to target until they got there.

"I don't know how they picked this one," Cartwright said.
