The man charged in a Hertford shooting death Sunday was the victim's cousin, according to police.
Hertford Interim Police Chief Brian Riddick said Travis Reaves, 26, who is charged with first degree murder, and Jamar Fletcher, 21, had apparently argued at a party early Sunday between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., but police are unsure what started the argument. Fletcher, the victim, was taken to his Dobbs Street home after the argument but was back on the street a short time later, Riddick said.
Riddick said Fletcher was shot from a car with a small-caliber handgun at about 3:40 a.m. at the intersection of King Street and Stokes Drive. Police have found no witnesses to the incident, which occurred in front of a federal housing complex. Police searched the car Reaves drives but found no evidence of the shooting.
Riddick said Reaves, Fletcher's first cousin, became the suspect in the case after his name kept coming up in the investigation. Because of the on-going probe, Riddick would not comment about other details of case.
Reaves turned himself in to police at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, approximately 30 minutes after a warrant for his arrest was issued, Riddick said. The weapon used to shoot Fletcher has not been recovered and police do not know what motivated he shooting.
