Currituck Schools convocation. The Currituck County Schools will hold a convocation at Currituck County Middle School today at 8:30 a.m. David Warlick will speak on 21st century literacy and learning.
Propagation, grafting workshop. The Currituck Extension Master Gardeners will hold a propagation and grafting workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Extension Center off U.S. Highway 158 in Barco. Ozzie Coor, of Coor Farm Supply, Landscapes and Greenhouses, in Smithfield, will speak. There is a $20 fee, which includes all supplies and lunch. Make checks payable to Currituck County. Jarvisburg Elementary dedication, open house. The Currituck County Schools will hold a dedication ceremony for Jarvisburg Elementary School Wednesday at 6 p.m. An open house will be held Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more info, call 232-2223.
Substitute teacher renewal training. The Currituck County Schools will hold workshop for all non-certified substitute teachers in Lecture Hall A at Currituck County High School Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Currituck Child Find screenings. The Currituck Child Find program will host screenings for children with disabilities and those in need of special education, at Central Elementary School on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. For more info, call 232-2223, ext. 297.
Whalehead Club Wine Festival. The Whalehead Club will host a Wine Festival Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost is $20. Participants will sample a variety of wines from North Carolina and around the world, keep a souvenir glass, and take a complimentary tour of the Whalehead Club. Musical entertainment will be provided by Kim Kalman. Concessions will be available. Pets on leash are welcome. Parking is free.
Whalehead Summer Concert Series. The Whalehead Summer Concert Series continues Thursday at 7 p.m. with a performance by Ruth Wyand on the club's south lawn. Wyand is a guitarist, songwriter and singer whose style harkens back to the early grass-roots of Americana. Concessions are available. Parking is free. First-ever CCFAFA golf tournament. The Currituck County Foster & Adoptive Family Association will host its first-ever CCFAFA Golf Tournament starting at noon Friday, Sept. 12 at Mill Run Golf Club, Moyock. Funds from the event will be used to support foster programs throughout Currituck County. Several gifts and raffles for participants are scheduled. The rain date is Friday, Sept. 19. Shawboro Ruritan Club open house. The Shawboro Ruritan Club will host an open house to celebrate the club's 60th anniversary, Sunday, Sept. 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Beginner's bonsai class. The Currituck Center of the Cooperative Extension Service in Barco will host a beginner's bonsai class Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ronnie Baum of the Virginia Bonsai Society will be the instructor. Cost is $50. All materials will be provided and lunch is included. Class size is limited to 15. World War II veterans sought. American Legion Post 288 in Coinjock is seeking to contact all Currituck World War II veterans. Many are entitled to the World War II Victory Medal but haven't received it. American Legion Post 288 hopes to present the medals to all eligible veterans at the Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at Veterans Memorial Park in Coinjock. Fire and EMS board meeting. The Currituck Fire and EMS Advisory Board will meet at 7 p.m. the third Thursday of each month in Courtroom C of the Judicial Building located near the county's governmental complex at 2801 Caratoke Highway.

FSA County Committee nominations under way. Farmer and rancher candidate nominations began June 15 for local Farm Service Agency county committees and continue through today. To be eligible to serve on a committee, applicants must participate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote, and must maintain a place of residence in the district seeking to represent. Ballots will be mailed beginning Nov. 3 and are due by Dec. 1.
