What is NIE?

As early as 1795 the use of newspapers in classrooms was considered; however, it was not until the 1930s that an organized use of newspapers in schools began. A Newspapers In Education program works with schools to enhance the education of students. Newspapers are used in classrooms as textbooks in almost all subject areas. The NIE program is found across the United States and internationally.

NIE Services/Information

The Daily Advance Newspapers In Education program provides the following services:
  • Classroom sponsorship/_Adopt-a-Classroom
  • Teacher workshops of 2 to 10 hours
  • Information about NIE studies and class use
  • Lesson ideas for serial stories
  • Lesson ideas for various classes

    Vacation Donations to NIE

Subscribers to The Daily Advance may donate their newspaper credits to the NIE program. When going on vacation call customer service (335-8076) and ask to have your newspaper credits given to NIE. Your newspapers will not be delivered while you are gone and your newspapers will be used for teacher workshops and area classrooms.

    NIE Partnerships or "Adopt-a-Class"

Gifts or donations to The Daily Advance NIE program provide classroom sets of newspapers for schools in the Advance circulation area. Teachers who register with The Daily Advance request a partner to provide their weekly class newspapers. When a partner is found, the partner is matched with a teacher and class to cover the newspaper's cost. Businesses and individuals are encouraged to "Adopt-a-Class" and provide the newspaper, a living textbook, to schools.

Teachers are sent the name and address of their business or individual partner. We encourage the teachers and their students to write to the group or person(s) who are providing their classroom sets of newspapers. In addition, partners are sent a certificate naming their _adopted_ teacher and classroom. Several times a year an acknowledgment is published in The Daily Advance thanking the generous partners who "adopt" classes.
