A political newcomer has filed for one of two 3rd Ward city council seats in Elizabeth City.
Milford Creecy filed for the office Tuesday, joining incumbent 3rd Ward Councilman Rickey King who filed Monday. King and Councilman Daniel Evans currently represent the 3rd Ward.
The Daily Advance was unable to reach Creecy Tuesday for comment.
Also filing on Tuesday were incumbent Councilman Willis Privott to his 4th Ward seat in Edenton and challenger William E. “Ed” Lane for one of two open seats on the Hertford Town Council.
Also on Tuesday, 4th Ward Councilwoman Volanda Watts announced that she plans to file for re-election to her seat in Elizabeth City. Former 4th Ward Councilman Johnnie Walton — whom Watts defeated in 2007 — filed as a candidate from the ward Monday.
Watts said she had enjoyed serving on council the past two years and feels that she owes the city her service.
“I want hopefully in the future to continue with making progress in bringing the city together,” Watts said, citing Saturday’s fireworks display and related activities as an example of the type of event that builds community spirit. “I’d like to see a lot more of that for next year and years to come,” she said.
The filing period for this fall’s municipal elections continues weekdays at area boards of elections through Friday, July 17.
