Area voters intending to vote early before the May 6 primary election can expect fewer days of one-stop voting but longer hours to cast their ballot.

The calendar for early voting, which begins today, has been shortened from 17 days to about 10 days following a change in state law from last year. Many counties have added extra voting hours each day to try to make up the difference.

In Pasquotank County, for example, voters can cast ballots early between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. every weekday between today and Friday, May 2. In Chowan County, hours for early voting on weekdays will be 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except on Thursday and Friday, May 1-2, when hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The May 6 primary election will let North Carolinians narrow the field of candidates for November’s general election by selecting party nominees for major federal, state and local

offices. At the top of the ballot are Republican, Democrat and Libertarian nominees for one of North Carolina’s two U.S. Senate seats. Candidates for state representative and senator are also on ballots, along with a slew of county commissioner races.

In Currituck, there’s also a Republican primary for sheriff, while in Perquimans, voters will be filling three seats on the county school board. There’s also a Democratic primary for district attorney in the seven area counties making up the 1st Prosecutorial District.

The following are the early voting sites and schedules for the five area counties:
