Elizabeth City police are searching for the driver of a car that left the scene of an accident Thursday that left four people injured, one of them critically.
Police Lt. John Etheridge said the car, only described as blue, was turning left from the entrance near Big Daddy’s Pizza on Weeksville Road when it pulled into the path of an oncoming Dodge Caravan van.
The driver of the van tried to avoid the car, but his vehicle struck it and then flipped over five times before coming to rest upside down in the eastbound lane of Weeksville Road.
One of the passengers in the van was ejected from the vehicle. She was flown by Nightingale helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Etheridge said. The woman was in critical condition late Thursday afternoon.
Three others in the Caravan were transported to Albemarle Hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries was unknown, and Etheridge did not know their addresses.
He would not immediately release the passengers’ names.
The blue car then left the scene of the accident, Etheridge said.
Police are currently trying to locate the driver of the vehicle, he said. The driver could face charges of hit and run or leaving the scene of the accident, he said.
