Firefighters are investigating what caused a fire to break out in the former Elizabeth City Milling Co. building off South Water Street late Friday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Dale Smith said that the reason for the fire is unknown, but that there was minimal damage found at the scene.

Smith said that a person in an adjacent hair salon extinguished most of the fire prior to the firefighters’ arrival at the scene.

Firefighters, emergency personnel and police officers received the call shortly before 5 p.m. Police officers quickly blocked off the part of South Water between Ehringhaus and Church streets.
