RALEIGH — North Carolina health officials say 11 people, including one child, died last week of illness related to the flu, more than double the number from the previous week.

Figures from the state Department of Health and Human Services reports the death toll from the flu now stands at 44. All but two of the victims are adults.

DHHS medical epidemiologist Zack Moore said that despite the spike in deaths, the two main public health surveillance systems in the state show dips in the number of new cases of flu-like illnesses.

Moore told The News & Observer of Raleigh that the decline in new cases could mean that the flu season isn’t getting any worse.

Public health officials continue to urge those who haven’t been vaccinated yet to do so
