What does the Residential
What does the Residential Energy Efficiency Task Force have to do with anybody's front yard?
Biggest Problem
Everybody in this city would be grateful if the shipyard could be cleaned-up. It is outrageous that it is allowed to be a blight on our beautiful riverfront. The dumps are far nicer looking than the shipyard. Find a way to fix our biggest problem. They are "chronic violators!"
Brooks right for once!
Brooks is right on point regarding boats being ON the property. Where else are boat owners going to keep their boats? Instead of worrying decent law abiding citizens with such a trivial issue, why not go after the biggest eyesore in the city and on the river, Elizabeth City Shipyard. This area is far more unsightly and junkier looking than anyone's boat could ever be sitting in a yard. There's no doubt that "good old boys" politics have kept this blighted property issue suppressed for many years. When is city counsel going to grow some "nads" and do what's right and fair instead of doing what's politically motivated and unjust?
Parking of boats in your driveway
I own a fairly new boat that I bought here in Elizabeth City. The boat is registered with the state as well as the trailer. I pay taxes on the boat and trailer. I certaintly do not think it is an eye sore for our city. I go fishing two to three times per week so I need the boat where I can get to it, not parked outside of the city. I do not have the option of putting the boat in my back yard. I would have to remove the fencing around my back yard in order to get the boat into my back yard.
If this amendment passes what is next? Is the city going to tell me I can't park a tan car in my driveway or park a foreign made car in my yard ? There are a lot of issues that the Task Force does need to address that would help Elizabeth City, but where I park my boat isn't one of them.
If I misspelled anything it is not my wifes fault.

Lest we forget
Aren't we a riverfront community? Isn't the Pasquotank River a huge part of the draw for our area? Don't we focus many city festivals and events around the river and the downtown area? Dont' we want people here? Why would we cut off our nose to spite our face?
There are other (commercial) areas of our city that should be garnering the attention of rulings like this, why push it off on the homeowner who already pays both city and county taxes and ridiculously high electric rates? To me, this is nit-picky. The ruling about parking a boat or RV on the street, yes I could see, but THIS?
I don't even own a boat but if I did I would be mightily offended by a rule like this, it's just a little "too close to home".
I would think that the City would be trying to think of creative ways to offer people within the city limits a perk for staying. Why do you think everyone builds out in the county, or better yet, in the next county? Why should they wish to live within city limits? What do we as a CIty offer up to people who choose to stay within the city limit and support our local economy? More restrictions?
Let's be positive and enhance what we have, not rule, restrict, control and tear down. This is not a deal-breaker rule, it's more about cosmetics than safety or anything else. At least, let's get our own house in order before we try to tell the little guy what he needs to do. Glass houses and all that...eh?
