Martin Luther King Jr. Drive south of Elizabeth Street will be reclosed starting next week to accommodate work on the continuing Elizabeth Street restoration project.

City Manager Rich Olson said Friday the N.C. Department of Transportation will close the street’s intersection with Elizabeth Street Tuesday evening.

The closure will allow a subcontractor on the Elizabeth Street project to pump foam concrete onto the roadway. The intersection needs to be closed because the subcontractor will be pumping the concrete from behind the nearby former Elizabeth City Middle School site.

DOT, which is overseeing the Elizabeth Street project, hopes to re-open the Martin Luther King Jr. intersection on or before Aug. 13, Olson said. All other intersections on Elizabeth Street currently open will remain so during the work, he said.

Closing MLK St. and leaving all the others open????? FOUL!!!! This is inexcusable! A blatant act and violation of civil rights, I say! Olson better hope Barber and his followers don't get Rachel Maddow and the Rainbow Coalition gang down here on this one. Talk about skating on thin ice...............
