POWELLS POINT — A 12-year-old boy who was reported missing has been found, the Currituck Sheriff’s Office said.

Bambi Doughtie posted on Facebook that her son Jacob had been missing since 6:30 a.m. today, when he was supposed to be at a bus stop. Sheriff Susan Johnson said her office considered Jacob to be a runaway.

Johnson said Jacob failed to board the school bus and also wasn’t present at school. She said he might be in a wooded area near his home, which is off Caratoke Highway.

Late this afternoon, Johnson said the boy has been found and is unharmed.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Lindsay Voorhees said sheriff's deputies found Jacob in the Powells Point area, close to his residence. Voorhees said the reason why Jacob ran away remains unknown.

Jacob was located shortly after 4 p.m.

Johnson said her office was called by Jacob’s mother shortly before 8:50 a.m.

Johnson was en route to the area this afternoon. She said her office doesn’t know why the boy ran away, but she said her office hasn’t had any trouble with him in the past.
