A section of Water Street between Colonial Avenue and Elizabeth Street will be closed from 4 p.m. Thursday until 6:30 a.m. Friday for work on the future eastbound Elizabeth Street drawbridge over the Pasquotank River.
Contractor Archer Western crews are constructing a new eastbound bridge at the site.
Plans this week call for pouring concrete at the future bascule on the Elizabeth City side of the river. City Manager Rich Olson said that crews poured concrete last week and that, sometime next month, will do a third and final pour.
The bascule, when completed, will serve as the location of one wing of the drawbridge.
The bridgework is part of the restoration of Elizabeth Street from just west of North Road Street to the Camden County side of the riverbank. Overall, the plan is to have bridge- and street work completed by the start of June 2015.
