Members of a new Pasquotank panel looking into ways to increase minority representation on the Board of Commissioners agree that eventually county residents need to move beyond casting votes on the basis of race.

Qualified or entitled?
I've said it many times. Provide a person of character, good morals, and solid leadership abilities and that person WILL be elected. To place someone lacking these attributes and qualities in a position of leadership JUST because of his/her race or ethnicity is nothing short of a travesty.
Apparently, the supply of "A few good men" is in much shorter supply than was once thought.
This is sickening to read...
And it shows how far back society has slid. If you are voting for the most qualified individual... why does it matter what color they are? Why does it matter? I don't care if I work under an all black senior staff or all white senior staff. I want to know that my superiors are holding their positions by merit and qualifications... not skin color or gender.
I am stunned! On the front
I am stunned! On the front page of today's Daily Advance, directly under an article about Dr. King and President Obama, is an article stating that we should elect commission members based on race, the color of their skin, regardless of the candidate's qualifications. Dr. King said that we should judge a person by the content of their character, NOT by the color of their skin. President Obama was elected because he was viewed as the most qualified for the office, NOT because of his skin color. Suggesting that a candidate be elected based purely on race/skin color is an insult to all thinking Americans and the legacy of Dr. King. The article states that "county voters need to move beyond casting votes on the basis of race", then contradicts itself by saying that we should vote by race! Utter nonsense...
No To New Districts
It is sad to see voting manipulation being put forth by Commissioner Perry and Serriett. Both are on a three man panel to review this issue, DUH, I wonder what the panel will endorse? I strongly believe that if a conservative minority ran at large against a tax and spend incumbent, he would win. The conservative voter will vote for a minority any day of the week, contrary to Mr. Perry's observation. I do not want a bickering ward similar to the Elizabeth City system. President Obama proves that a minority can win with the right message.
Equal in the eyes of whom?
How will we ever become equal when OUR government insists on mandates that say we are not!
I don't vote
by race, but by qualifications. But if you pursue this, I plan to contest there is no female representation on the board and I fully expect it to be vetted before a panel and a solution put into place.
Race
Every citizen has the right to sign up and have right to vote and be voted for, race, color or religion. If the citizens elect to vote or not to vote that is their option, But to have one race favored over another is wrong. The citizen of the county will decide, as they have in the past.
