North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue has vetoed a bill that strips the revenue stream from the state’s largest teachers’ advocacy group.

The Democratic governor said Saturday it’s the seventh time this year she’s blocking legislation passed by the Republican-run General Assembly.

Republican legislators singled out the Democrat-friendly North Carolina Association of Educators to stop it from deducting membership dues from paychecks.

Republican leaders say the cutoff of dues was not an attack on teachers. They say it was a move against the political activity of the group’s leadership against GOP causes.

Mecklenburg County Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis calls the group a “political machine for the left.”

Perdue says she vetoed the legislation because it tries to punish a group that opposed the Republican budget, which included education spending cuts.
