Two men in a small red Dodge minivan are traveling around Perquimans County offering to clean carpets but instead are probably looking to rob people, according to Sheriff Eric Tilley.

Tilley said he’s had several calls.

“They knock on your door and offer you a gift like Dawn dishwashing detergent and want to clean your carpets.”

In one case Tilley said he’s heard the pair just walked into one house uninvited.

The suspects are described as two black males, one old and one young, he said.

“If anybody sees these people, we urge them to call the sheriff’s department right away. If they can, get a license number.”

Tilley said if the pair are actually cleaning carpets, he said a homeowner could do just as well doing it with their vacuum cleaner.

“What I think they’re trying to do is scope people out,” Tilley said.

So far the pair have concentrated on rural, sparsely populated areas.
