The Perquimans County Board of Elections on Monday will recount the votes cast in this week’s Hertford Town Council race, an elections official said Friday.
Vice Mayor Horace Reid, who lost by one vote in Tuesday’s balloting, requested the recount Friday, Eula Mae Forbes, director of the Perquimans Board of Elections, said.
Forbes said the recount will begin at 9 a.m. with results expected immediately.
The town of Hertford will bear the cost of the recount, she added.
Reid was defeated by political newcomers Ed Lane and Lillian Holman for the two open seats on Hertford Town Council.
Lane led the votes with 194, followed by Holman with 138. Reid received 137 votes.
The race included two other candidates: Quentin Jackson, who received 74 votes and Lloyd Hodges, who garnered 39.
Reid has served on council since 1997, and is currently serving his third term as vice mayor. Nearly 300 voters turned out in Hertford and Winfall Tuesday compared with 256.
