Soon, the downtown area will be the home of free wi-fi.

At the recent Committee of 100 meeting, Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Economic Development Director Wayne Harris said he believes this will be not only good for boaters arriving at Mariners’ Wharf Park, but also good for residents, visiting motorists and businesses that don’t mind using an unsecured connection for routine communications.

Also, Harris said he believes the free wi-fi will enable Elizabeth City to establish a bit of a brand identity “as a little city that’s sort of on the cutting edge.”

Harris said the installation will be provided by a private sponsor who does not wish to be identified, along with help from a grant from ElectriCities. He also noted the system will have transmitters throughout the downtown area.

Harris said that the free wi-fi area will extend from the harbor to Road Street and from Ehringhaus to Elizabeth streets.

“We hope to get started on it within the next month or two,” he said.
