Albemarle Regional Health Services has issued a rabies notice for the Edgewood area of Elizabeth City.
Health Director Jerry Parks issued the notice after rabies was confirmed Friday in a cat.
Health officials urge anyone who may have been bitten, scratched, or exposed to saliva by any animal — particularly one that has not been vaccinated or is of unknown vaccination status — between July 30 and Aug. 27 to contact Pasquotank Animal Control at 331-1500.
“We don’t want to alarm residents in the Edgewood area; however, the community should be aware of this case and of the potential for exposure to themselves, family members, and their pets,” Parks said in a statement released by Albemarle Regional Health Services.
ARHS Health Officials advise the following:
• All animal bites need to be reported to Pasquotank Animal Control at 331-1500.
• Individuals exposed should contact their private health provider or call ARHS at 338-4400, 24 hours a day.
• Residents should ensure their pets have current rabies vaccinations. If a pet is allowed outside, a booster vaccination is recommended. Outdoor pets should be kept inside until they receive booster vaccines.
• Residents should not approach wildlife.
• Do not leave trash or food outside, unless it is in a trash can with a tight-fitting lid.
• If a pet is fed outside, do not leave the food out overnight.
• Do not leave pets outdoors unattended.
• If your pet comes in contact with an animal that may be rabid, contact Animal Control immediately.
