Alex Tavenier of Northeastern finished first in the girls race and Kiel Bollero of Currituck was first among boys, but First Flight topped the boys and girls standings in the first cross country meet of the season Monday in Tyner.
Tavernier won by more than a minute over runnerup Kelsey Temple of Currituck, clocking 21:41 on the 3.1-mile course. Bollero, meanwhile, nipped Ryan Wallace of First Flight by just two seconds with a time of 18:39.
First Flight, which had five runners finish third through seventh, scored 25 points in the girls race. Currituck was second with 52, followed by Northeastern (63), and Edenton (70).
The First Flight boys had 26 points. Edenton was second with 53. Currituck had 54 points and Northeastern 94. Columbia and Gates also participated, but did not field complete teams.
Other local girls who finished in the top 25 were: Sarah Rozier (eighth), Corrine Eosso (13th), Samantha Duncan (15th) and Rachelle Cleveland (19th) of Currituck; Yana Ginzburg (11th), Jill Moncla (14th), Rina Heyder (22nd) and Erica Meads (23rd) of Northeastern; and Marla Alvarado (ninth), Grace Brinson (12th), Brittany Smith (16th), Megan Copeland (21st) Grace Jordan (24th) and Ivy Cody (25th) of Edenton.
Area boys in the top 25 were: Blake Ferrell (eighth), Wilson Green (ninth), Cody Copeland (10th), Jacob Hughes (15th), Graham Mills (16th) and Matt Sampson (25th) of Edenton; Kevin Cosnahan (fourth), Kyle Kirkbride (12th) and Cody Eaves (17th) of Currituck; and Carlos Calderon (13th), Nick Miller (14th) and Kyle Albertson (20th).

Northeastern 3, Cape Hatteras 0: The Eagles got off to a fast start and cruised on the road Monday.
Freshman Nigel Cross scored in the third minute, then Dylan Owney added a second goal 7 minutes later. Forrest Dunston Scored rounded out the scoring for the Eagles (2-1) in the 32nd minute.
Coach Waylon Joyner credited goalie Tanner Cain and his defensive backs with an excellent game to secure the shutout.
Currituck 3, Manteo 2: The Knights held off a tough Manteo team to win their third game of the season on Monday.
Cody Aarestud scored on a header off a corner kick from Logan Rash to get Currituck (3-1-1) on the board. Rash scored on a pass from Tyler Camden to put the Knights up 2-0, but an own goal made the score 2-1 at halftime.
Tyler Lumsden fed Camden for what turned out to be the game winner, putting the Knights up 3-1.
“We started slow, but our passing was excellent,” Currituck coach Mark Chappell said. “Overall, it was a real good game on both sides.”
Edenton 1, Camden 1: No details were available on a game played Monday night.
