The University of North Carolina Board of Governors is expected to elect a new chancellor for Elizabeth City State University today.
UNC spokeswoman Joni Worthington said in a press release on Wednesday that the new chancellor will be elected during a special meeting of the Board of Governors scheduled to be held on the SAS Institute campus in Cary.
The Board of Governors is expected to endorse UNC President Tom Ross’ recommendation for the new chancellor.
Ross was provided the names of three finalists for the post in late July by the ECSU Board of Trustees. The finalists’ names were provided to trustees by a 23-member search committee who completed its six-month search for three chancellor candidates in late July.
Ross was projected to make his choice after interviewing all three finalists and conducting “additional due diligence” on each one, Worthington said.
The new chancellor, if selected by the UNC board today, is expected to take office on Jan. 1. The campus’s new leader will replace interim Chancellor Charles Becton, who has served at ECSU since July 1, 2013. Becton replaced Willie Gilchrist, who retired June 30, 2013.
