Elizabeth City State basketball fans who have seen their share of spectacular dunks by Angelo Sharpless could help make it possible for the Viking senior to compete at the Denny’s Slam Dunk Competition in Atlanta on Apr. 4.
The event, featuring a field of Division I dunkers, will be telecast by ESPN.
Sharpless is one of 16 “under-the-rader” players who have been selected to participate in the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker competition. The winner, who will be determined through head-to-head video matchups and voting at a Facebook website, will earn a berth in the Final Four dunk-off.
The Dark Horse Dunker entry has won the last two Denny’s Slam Dunk titles.

Sharpless is facing East Stroudsburg’s Terrance King in the first round.
In his submission video, the 6-foot-4 Sharpless bounces an alley-oop pass to himself over a defender and finishes with a reverse dunk.
The electric Viking already has a national following for his dunking ability. Last summer Sharpless made SportsCenter’s Top 10 with a dunk from the Ben Wallace Pro-Am in Richmond.
That dunk has received over 1.2 million hits on YouTube (youtube.com/watch?v=h60sZyaJBo).
By the way, locals have only two more chances to see Sharpless live in Elizabeth City before he finishes his career. ECSU is home Wednesday against Lincoln and closes out its R.L. Vaughan Center schedule on Feb. 23 against Bowie State.
