Recruitment of physicians to Albemarle Hospital apparently has been hamstrung by an exclusive recruitment contract with a Texas firm, Pasquotank County officials learned Monday.

BS to cover up the areas flaws
I know for a fact Drs have interviewed at Albemarle. The problem for them not signing had nothing to do with a Dallas, TX contract or Vident but the Hospital and the area. Think of it like this. A Dr coming out of residency ready to start work is minimum 30years of age. If they want to have kids, then for the next 20 years they have to worry about the quality of schools. That is over half their career. Add to that the high indigent population (over 25,000 in district 1), and the unhealthiest in the state (tied for last with two other districts) and then your talking about a tough job that doesn't pay. These are people in high demand due to a national shortage, unfortunately our area is losing to national competition. This will take a serious look at our area to fix. I think Mayor Peel and others have started the process.
We need a regional gifted and talented school that ranks in the top 50 or our area will continue on a downward slope.

This reminds me of the last public input meeting about Albemarle Hospital where Carolyn Allison, interim director of Gateway Community Health Center in Gates County spoke. She said they had been trying to recruit a Dr for over two and a half years and slowly offering higher and higher salaries but could not even get people wanting to interview for the job!
Vident may not be able to say what is wrong. Their ties to East Carolina University should help in recruiting as the medical school is listed as the most affordable in the country but ranks higher than the national average. We should require some sort of direct ties if a contract with Vident goes through.
Want to see what recruiting Doctors see?
Look at these two sites 1) school rankings, the district ranks a 4 out of 10, 10 is the highest score 2) cost of property is still too high from a decade of land speculation

Agree with George all around!
Can also say that the hospital heiarchy has some issues that have left a bad taste with several local doctors (current and past). I've known a handful of solid, quality docs who started in the ER here and quickly moved out of the area when an opportunity presented itself. We have issues here that need to be tackled...the schools are a big one as are the issues that seem to come from the lower income side of our citizens. Incoming military are warned about this by those who have lived here and moved on. Elizabeth City has so much promise.... but much of that will remain unrealized until we have leaders who want to foster real change and growth.
confusing
So does the county still have a the contract with the Texas firm who isn't doing their job or not?
Wha?
Technical problem? Or the power of article recycling?
