An Elizabeth City man is being held at Albemarle District Jail today on multiple charges after police say he assaulted his girlfriend and then fired gunshots at a car carrying both her and an infant.
Clinton Rashod Franklin, 26, of the 1200 block of Southern Avenue, is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and with one count of discharging a weapon into occupied property, police Capt. John Young said.
The shooting was reported shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Hunter Street, between Riverside and Jones avenues. No one was struck by the gunfire, Young said.
When police arrived, they found Tairina Spellman, her sister, Christine Mullen, and the infant in the car, Young said. Spellman had bruises and abrasions on her face and upper body, he said.
Spellman told police that Franklin had assaulted her at a residence on Hunter Street and then pointed a handgun at her and Mullen, threatening to kill them both, Young said.
Spellman told police she grabbed the infant, ran out of the residence and got in a car parked outside. Franklin then allegedly fired multiple rounds from the handgun at the car, while both Spellman and the infant were inside.
Franklin was apprehended not long after the incident, Young said.
In addition to the assault and discharging a weapon charges, Franklin is charged with two counts of assault on a female, one count of assault by pointing a gun, one count of communicating threats, one count of injury to personal property, one count of going armed to the terror of the people and one count of discharging a firearm in city limits.
Franklin is being held in lieu of $136,000 secured bond. According to court records, he is scheduled to appear in Pasquotank County District Court on Nov. 21.
