The Coast Guard medevaced a 66-year-old man earlier today from a cruise ship approximately 50 miles east of Wilmington.

Coast Guard officials received word at approximately 10:45 p.m. Tuesday from the cruise vessel Carnival Splendor that the man was in medical distress. Air Station Elizabeth City responded by launching a helicopter team.

The team arrived at approximately 1:30 a.m., hoisted the man aboard and took him to Wilmington International Airport. From there, the man was transported via ambulance to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

The Coast Guard doesn't release names of rescued persons, but Coast Guard officials said the man is in stable condition.
