COROLLA — The body of a Wake County teenager who had been missing off the Currituck Outer Banks since Saturday was recovered on Monday.
The body of Thomas Harman, 16, of Fuquay-Varina, was recovered about 10:15 a.m. at mile post 13 1/2, Sheriff Susan Johnson said.
According to Johnson, Harman was with two other swimmers who encountered trouble in the waters off mile post 15, in the Old Tides Inn area, around 4 p.m. Saturday.
Bystanders were able to reach two swimmers and pull them to safety but were unable to get to the third, Johnson said.
Corolla Ocean Rescue began a search for the missing swimmer, identified as Harman.
Joining the search were volunteer firefighters from stations six and seven and personnel from county Emergency Medical Services and the Currituck Sheriff’s Office.
Harman’s body has been sent to the regional medical examiner’s office in Greenville, where an autopsy will be performed, Johnson said.
