The 60-year-old bridge over Goodwin Mill Creek on Great Hope Church Road in Perquimans County will be closed starting Aug. 18 so it can be replaced, state transportation officials have said.

Located just west of Hertford, the Great Hope Church Road bridge is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, state Department of Transportation officials said. That means the bridge is safe for use, but is in a deteriorating condition and a new bridge is needed.

DOT has posted a weight limit restricting single-axle vehicles weighing more than five tons from using the bridge. The new bridge, which should be open by December, will be safer and will not include weight limits.

During the work detours will be in place.

The bridge on Great Hope Church Road is the second of six Perquimans bridges that are scheduled to be replaced. The first was the bridge on Burnt Mill Road.
