RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's official groundhog has seen his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter.
Sir Walter Wally's prediction at a ceremony just after noon Wednesday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh runs counter to Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil, who did not see his shadow earlier in the day.
Early morning clouds lifted and temperatures soared into the 70s in Raleigh on Groundhog Day, an unusual occurrence in a mostly cold winter.
The State Climate Office says records show Sir Walter Wally has been right about 70 percent of the time in the past decade.
The groundhog saw his shadow last year, and temperatures for the next six weeks in Raleigh were nearly six degrees below normal.
